How a commission moves through the atelier
The studio runs a commission the way a stretch wall runs a canvas: one measured step at a time. It begins with an enquiry and a photograph, either by email at art@haydensmythart.hair or by telephone at +18145544377. The next step is a study, where the studio tests the pose and the light on a small panel and shares the result for comment. Once the composition is agreed, the full canvas is stretched, primed and painted over several weeks, with the studio sending progress photographs at agreed moments rather than forcing the client to wait in silence. When the paint has set, the commission is varnished, framed and collected or shipped from North Salt Lake. No stage is rushed, because a portrait that is hurried is a portrait that is later repainted.
Colour choices matter more than clients expect. The studio builds flesh tones from a small set of earth pigments and a single crimson, keeping skin alive rather than cosmetic, and it keeps backgrounds quiet so the face does the work. If a client wants a room matched, the studio asks for a photograph of the wall and adjusts the ground colour of the canvas to sit beside the upholstery rather than fight it. This is the difference between a picture and a portrait worth the wall.
